NEW YORK (CBS 2) – Hourglass figures and statement jewelry were favorites among the glamorous attendees at Sunday night’s Emmy awards – but that’s not to say there weren’t a few risky wardrobe choices.
CBS 2’s Dana Tyler takes a look at the fashion hits and misses.
First, the misses.
What was January Jones thinking? Some found her Versace gown with the pointy top and uneven bottom downright comical.
“It kind of had a Jetsons-type silhouette,” said Dawn Yanek, Editor-in-Chief of Life & Style Weekly. “The top was cone-shape and Madonna-like.”
Also on Life & Style’s list of gowns-gone-wrong was Anna Paquin’s dress.
“It basically featured gold armor on her shoulders,” said Yanek. “It was definitely a risky style, one that didn’t necessarily pay off.”
But Yanek said overall, it was a night for classic Hollywood style.
“The color navy blue, also embellishments and a-symmetrical, really dramatic necklines,” she said. “And statement jewelry made a big comeback.”
Wardrobe hits included Glee star Leah Michelle.
“She looked absolutely gorgeous in that navy blue Oscar de la Renta gown,” Yanek said.
Blonde bombshell Claire Danes also did it right in Swarovski-encrusted Armani gown.
“She just looked like perfect,” Yanek said.
And Emmy winner Kyra Sedgewick kept it real by keeping it simple.
“She didn’t overdo it with jewelry, didn’t overdo it with hair and make up,” said Yanek. “And of course she had the best accessory – Kevin Bacon as her husband.”
Hourglass shapes were popular – and so was wearing white.
“When you’re Kim Kardashian and you’re a woman with killer curves, it’s easy to go over the top in the fashion category.” said Yanek. “But she looked like an absolute goddess.”
Yanek said the standout among the men was the stand-up hair on Oscar winner Al Pacino. He won a Best Actor emmy for his role as a real-life Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
“Al Pacino can do whatever he wants, because he’s Al Pacino,” Yanek said. “But the hair is getting a little crazy. He might wanna reign that in for next year.”
In the meantime, we’ll see what fashion trends end up going from the red carpet to a store near you.

The Emmy Awards 2010 secured its place as the one of the best-dressed events of the year with breathtaking appearances from stars including Glee’s Lea Michele, Mad Men’s January Jones, Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria Parker and Claire Danes (who won the Lead Actress Award). Our favourite leading ladies battled it out on the red carpet in lust-worthy designer dresses to scoop the best-dressed award of the day – but we just couldn’t decide on the winner!
The Hollywood boys didn’t disappoint either. George Clooney, who took home the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, set the fashion standard in a classic tuxedo by Giorgio Armani – swoon!
The fashion fabulous Mad Men took one of the top awards of the night with the Best Drama Award, whilst Glee’s Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) took home the award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. There were two official British winners of the night with Archie Panjabi picking up the award for best supporting actress for her role in TV Drama The Good Wife and Julia Ormond, who won Best Supporting Actress in for her performance in TV film Temple Grandin.
